How to budget a tennis court resurfacing

What drives the price, what public bid tabs in our five states actually show per court, and how to get a budget number you can put in next year's plan.

Start with what a resurface is

A tennis court resurface is a system, not a coat of paint: preparation (pressure wash, removal of loose material, grinding where needed), crack treatment, one or more acrylic resurfacer coats to fill texture and level the surface, two color coats, and lines. A repaint is two color coats and lines over a sound surface, and costs less. If the court is cracking, peeling or holding water, a repaint on top of it is money thrown away. What is in a resurface.

What public bid results show per court

Public owners publish their awards, so you do not have to guess. These are other owners' results for plain acrylic resurfacing of existing courts, cited at the bottom of this page. They are not EliteTrax pricing, and every court is different, but they bracket the market.

OwnerScopeAwardPer court
City of Hutchinson, KS (2025)8 tennis courts: crack fill, resurface, color, lines, four courts kept open$53,300 low bid; four other bids from $78,800 to $120,400$6,663 to $15,050
City of Benton, AR (2026)4 tennis courts: wash, crack repair, birdbath leveling, resurfacer, two color coats, lines, nets and posts$59,840$14,960
McKinney ISD, TX (2025)16 tennis courts at three campuses, surfacing only, nets and posts, via co-op proposal$242,408 plus $15,000 crack contingencyabout $15,150
City of Little Rock, AR (2026)14 to 17 asphalt tennis courts via Sourcewellnot to exceed $133,655$7,862 to $9,547
City of Des Peres, MO (2024)One tennis and pickleball court via co-op$20,495$20,495 (single court)

Two things stand out. Winning prices on 4 to 16 court jobs cluster between about $6,700 and $16,000 per court, and single-court jobs cost more per court because mobilization does not shrink. On the same job, losing bids ran 1.5 to 2.3 times the winner, which says the spread is in how much preparation each bidder assumed, not in the materials.

What moves the number

  • Court count. Mobilization, equipment and crew travel are spread across every court on site. A one or two court job carries a premium per court; a six court job does not.
  • Slab condition. Hairline cracks on a post-tensioned slab get ground, filled with a two-part polyurethane crack filler and ground smooth. Structural cracks, delamination or birdbaths deeper than 1/16 inch add preparation and leveling, and a slab that has moved may need more than a resurface. Resurface or rebuild.
  • What is included. Net posts, nets, windscreen, fencing repair, hitting boards and logos are separate lines. Ask every bidder to price the same list.
  • Colors. Standard Laykold colors are included in our pricing; vibrant colors carry an upcharge because the pigments cost more.
  • Indoor versus outdoor. Indoor courts cannot be flood tested, cure slower and have access limits, but skip weather delays.
  • Cushioned systems. A cushioned Laykold system adds layers and cost; clubs and indoor facilities choose it for player comfort.
  • Phasing. Keeping some courts open, as Hutchinson required and OU required, adds sequencing but is normal for us.

How to get a budget number

Send two or three photos (the worst crack, the lowest spot where water sits, a wide shot), the address and the court count. You will get a realistic scope and a budget number, even if the work is a year out. For public owners, that number can go straight into next fiscal year's request; when the money is appropriated, the proposal follows. Get a budget number.

Timing and return to play

Acrylic goes down at 50 degrees and rising at the surface, which sets the season: roughly March through November in Texas, April through October further north. Outdoor courts are ready to play 24 hours after the lines go down when night temperatures stay above 60 degrees; indoor courts, plan on three days. Full cosmetic cure takes about 28 days.

Questions

Is $15,000 per court a fair tennis court resurfacing price?

On the public awards cited here it sits at the upper end of winning prices for 4 to 16 court jobs with sound slabs. Whether it is fair for your courts depends on slab condition, what is included and how many courts share the mobilization. Send photos and you will get a number for your courts.

Why do bids on the same courts vary so much?

Preparation assumptions. One bidder prices a wash and a quick crack fill; another prices grinding, leveling and proper crack treatment. Ask every bidder to state what preparation and crack treatment are included so you compare like for like.

Can a school district buy resurfacing without a bid?

In Texas, yes, through a cooperative contract such as EPIC6, which EliteTrax holds. See the cooperative purchasing guide.
